Psychics and Spirituality History of Spiritualism The phenomena associated with spiritualism have been around since the beginning of mankind. Throughout the ages human have been aware of the existence of discarnate beings and the spiritual world of which they inhabit. When man lived close to nature ancestor worship became common place, and the people following those religions believed that their ancestors survived death and could effect the living for good or ill. As a result ancestors where treated with reverence and respect in order to gain favour with them. The tribal wise man or mediums and psychics as they are now called would develop methods of communication in order to pass on information from the spirit world. There is nothing new about the existence of a spirit world and the methods that psychics and mediums use to make contact. The Greeks consulted oracles and the Assyrians and Romans practised divination by augury to obtain guidance from the Gods. The Bible in both the Old and New Testaments has many references to psychic abilities, inspirational speech, speaking in other languages, physical mediumship, healing and messages in the form of dreams. The 4th century brought an end to the use of psychics and mediums as it was decreed that divine guidance should be solely through the jurisdiction of the church and priesthood. This was accentuated in Middle Ages when religious sanctions for the persecution of witches was given. During this long period of persecution anyone suspected of using psychic gifts for whatever purpose was in danger of torture, trial and burning. Hundreds of thousands of psychics were put to death by organised 'witch-hunters'.
People began gathering in their homes in order to develop their own investigations and communication. As it's popularity grew Spiritualist Societies began springing up throughout the USA expanding the study and incorporating religious teachings that where being received from spirit. In 1853 the first Spiritualist Church was established in the British Isles by David Richmond at Keighley in Yorkshire the popularity of spiritualism grew to such an extent that by the 1870s there were numerous Spiritualist societies and churches throughout the British Isles. It soon became apparent that the many churches and societies needed to come together in order to gain religious recognition, credibility and freedom of worship. The Spiritualists National Federation was formed in July 1880 and later became incorporated under the Companies Acts in 1902. The main object of the Spiritualists' National Union is to promote the advancement of the religion and religious philosophy of Spiritualism on the basis of the Seven Principles communicated by Robert Owen in 1871. 1. The Fatherhood of God.
